Plastic pollution

Our Water Dragon is made entirely from recycled plastic bottles and utensils, such as forks and spoons. In our design, the bottles near to the head is filled with water. The water in these bottles are used to balance the dragon.

The belly of this dragon is filled with plastic trash, which is represented by the plastic wrapper around the bottle whcih we had cut off. This is to symbolise that it too suffered the same fate as the millions of birds and marine animals that die each year from consuming or becoming caught in plastic and other debris that we throw away. Thus, our sculpture aims to raise awareness of environmental sustainability and the need to cut down on the use of plastic disposables, as said in our theme

A huge problem with plastic is that it isn’t biodegradable. This means that it is unable to break down/takes hundreds of years to break down naturally. Therefore, if these plastic wastes are thrown into the environment, it will dirty the environment and harm the organisims around it. To make matters worse, plastics is being overused in an unsustainable manner. We use plastic for a LOT of things. In fact, plastic is part of our everyday lives, be it our bottles or plastic bags; but how many of us ever stop to think about what happens to the plastic after we’re done using it, or where it ends up? The ‘out of sight, out of mind’’ philosophy is very prevalent when it comes to a lot of environmental issues, especially the issue with plastic. Simply because we may not be seeing the physical damage to the environment and animals, it does not mean it is not happening. The next page will show you the harms done to the environment and its organisms when plastic waste is simply disposed.
